Simple...but better?

2

Changed font...

Next...

The previous design looked really cheap when printed on paper.  Very plain and too simple...
Did not know what to do...
Using the London Tube font too tacky?
What else can I do with the calendar?
What other info?  Do I need other Info?

Decided to try using different types of paper to print on.  Maybe that is the problem...

Trial 2

having hard time using the Illustrator.
It seems to plain at the moment,
add info?

Interim Crit

Suggestions during crit:

-think about font
-placement of text
-content

-what else can be on the calendar.
-when and where to top-up ver. tube map

Content

Placing the content...

Decided to use
  • London Underground font
  • Colour palette of the Oyster Card (light blue/blue)
  • text horizontal
=so it will look better as a whole, when placed in the cardholder

  • Print on harder paper.

Receipt/ Travel Card

Wow... talk about timing.

Interesting 5 pound note I received as my change
in off-license store (convenient store) when buying a newspaper.

A "little" emberassing when using it!

Factors to think about...

1. Hierarchy of information
2. Typography
3. Colour
4. Material

Of course the challenge of this design brief is to be able to consider the factors listed above in order to create a better interface between the card itself and the user.

The other part of the challenge is using the Illustrator!

Rebecca recommended lynda.com for Illustrator tutorials.

What I would like to have...

Idea 1:

Enter your info.
Term time
Holidays
as much detail so that the machine can calculate the most economical offer.
and the receipt will have this info...

NAME:

Type: Student
Most used route:
Weekday: Victoria-Holborn , Bus Stop A- Victoria
Weekend: Westminster- Bond Street
    Camden Town - London Bridge

Term 1: Oct. 6- Dec. 12

Monthly Travel Card Season Ticket (zone 1-2): 64.90 ( 30% off from 93.00)

Oct 16 : Start
Nov 15: Expire

Nov 15: Start
Dec 14: Expire

Suggestion for this term:
Weekly travel card for the first 2 weeks : 16.90 x 2 =33 .80
Monthly travel card from October 16- Nov 15 : 64.90
Monthly travel card from Nov 15- Dec 14: 64.90

Total : 163.6

tutorial feedback

Reflection on the 15 minute tutorial with Rebecca.

Decided to change the direction slightly.

Rather than designing the oyster card case,
I decided to design the receipt.

Include information such as:

-the expiry date for travel card
-approximation of the next top-up date
-tube map of  point A~B (so you know exactly how much was used )
-the most economical way to top-up or to use travel card

Aim: Designing a receipt for better interface between the user and the oyster card.

Feedback

How do you make the Oyster Card as important as money... you make a creative connection that emphasizes  VALUE of the Oyster Card to yourself.

Illustrator Experiments

Design

My first time using Illustrator.
Get the obvious and simple idea out of the way...

Online sketchbook

Googled "online-sketchbook"

a sketchbook that can flip.

I thought this is a great idea because it does not loose as much hand drawn
quality of a sketchbook.

BLOG

BLOG AS A ONLINE SKETCHBOOK.

the pro and con of keeping the process of a project just popped in my mind.

Pro.
When ideas/thoughts/concepts are in your own sketchbook,
it is written in a language that you only understand, because it's for yourself.
But, because I am aware that this is on the internet, and have readers,
I am more careful in what I write.  It is helpful in a way that it will  clear
your thoughts because it is aimed for readers.

Con.
Because it is on the internet, and images can be posted, I do not print as I would do
if it was for a sketchbook.

I guess a combination of a hand written sketchbook with a online sketchbook will be best.
In that case, I should print these images I have on this blog!

CONCEPT

The sketches below, as you can see are all

oyster card PLUS something.

Idea that...

the more interaction the user of the Oyster Card has
it will increase their awareness to the card itself.

Thus, remind themselves of their travel card expiry dates/ top-up.

REFLECTION
-Just wanted to get the obvious ideas on paper so I could
develop it further.

-Do I concentrate purely on the design? (typography, colour, layouts etc.) or Could I add some other ideas to it....

-I think the next step is to decide which idea to go with and develop the design itself.
For example...

typography
size
shape
layout
material

Images of Oyster C by me part II

Images I took... (oyster c. research)

Research : Oyster Card

http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyster_Card (wikipedia)

consciousness

the NEXT step/idea
  • keeping check book while top-up
  • in a fun way? like crossword puzzle book (<-inspired by passengers on train doing the crossword section of the newspaper)
  1. look through my cash book/ expense notebook, photograph as well
  2. research oyster card/ oyster card sleeves
  3. research other card sleeves/ other ways to store cards
  4. sketch design ideas, could be obvious / boring design.  Put ideas on paper so I could move on.

Group Interim Crit

Went to the crit preparing to say that I was deciding on either

Designing and Oyster Card/ Oyster Card sleeves

or

Designing stickers/bar codes to raise awareness of value of products that you owned

I thought designing the sticker was more interesting but at the end of the day decided to go with designing an oyster card sleeve.  Come to think about it I do not think I was very much interested at all in designing a sticker...

After the group crit, I thought that I could design a Oyster Card sleeve that raises awareness of it's value (top-up/ charged).
Rebecca liked this idea more because of the concept.  Once the oyster card is topped up/ charged you no longer think about the money... until you are out of top-up or the on expiry date.

So my job is to reintroduce consciousness into Oyster Card through design.

Sticker

Thinking that designing an oyster card sleeve boring,
naturally went with idea of designing a sticker to raise awareness
of value.

These are images that I found through my research

Oyster Card

Thinking about the remaining time till the deadline ( 28/11) and working on a 2,000 word essay that is due on 2/12
decided to go with the Oyster Card.  As Rebecca said , there is a huge potential in a graphical way.  However, was not hyped up about this idea because at this moment all I could think of was to design the oyster card itself and or the sleeves.

Thought process...

I tend to lose/leave oyster card, credit card, memory stick
but I do not lose money.

Why?
Money= can see it
once it is not money, though the value of the product =money, the form changes...

so how do I solve this problem...

1. Oyster Card - design card itself, card holder

2. Credit Card- design a box to place the card each time you come home.

3.  Memory Stick/wallet/ oyster card/ credit card.
-design bar code
-design price tag
=stick it on any product you own ,awareness of value

First Meeting

Unable not attend the group meeting on 17 /11 due to print production.
So met with the tutor for the Interactive Design project Rebecca Ross afterwards.
She said the Tip system and the Oyster Card seems to have the most potential
to work with, in which I agree.  The tip system because of the cultural differences and oyster
card from it's graphical point of view.

Thanks to this meeting I was able to narrow it down to these ideas.

My decision making process begins....

Tip system or Oyster Card?
